mUlt1ACE reliability

The original task of mUlt1ACE, keeping filaments dry and ready and preloading them, runs here without problems apart from minor issues. That is also why the software is marked as beta, until most of these minor issues are resolved.

Since I warn about the swaps everywhere, but some people still think they are getting a free AMS, here is a detailed explanation.

Why color swaps are not fully reliable

The color swaps currently use the Snapmaker stock routines. These are not designed for frequent swaps, and on top of that the ACE units have their own quirks:

  • ACE 1: spools tend to jam.
  • ACE 2: with some filaments there are transport problems.

The stock tip forming of the U1 tends to produce unclean tips over many swaps. The result is failed loads or tips getting stuck during unload. In that case, unfortunately the only option is to pause.

What to realistically expect

When all filaments harmonize with the ACE and U1, I reach between 20 and 70 trouble-free swaps on my system. On other systems, however, problems can occur every other swap.

This is why I have mentioned several times that the system is not reliable. Not because it generally does not work, but because clean, high-swap-count printing depends heavily on your exact filament and hardware combination.

Help make it better

This is being worked on, and the community is invited to take part. On my own I certainly cannot test thousands of filaments to create clean tip forming routines that fit everywhere.
